South Pole Race: UPDATE

Matt Elliott and his team mate called in requesting to be picked up by the support team. With Matt struggling with swollen lips and Yoyo not be able to consume food, the team was brought forward to the checkpoint for treatment by the race doctor and a short recovery period before attempting the second leg to the South Pole.

All teams are constantly under medical surveillance and when reaching the Mid-race Checkpoint everyone has to do several medical check-ups and rest for at least 24 hours as this is one of the most extreme races in the world.

The South Pole is the toughest endurance race on the planet. The competitors will race to be the first to the Geographic South Pole fighting against winds of up to 80mph, temperatures as low as -40C, and the threat of blinding snowstorms, this is the ultimate extreme endurance race set in the stunning landscape of one of the coldest, driest, and highest deserts on the planet.

Matt Elliott and Navigator Paper have joined up and boarded in this adventure to raise funds for both The Alzheimer's Society and The Royal Britsih legion. The north american designers Nikki Salk and Amy Flurry create a kind of a theatrical pieces using paper-cut techniques. They collaborate together in this paper-cut project to produce elaborate hand made paper creations that can be exposed, for instance in clothing store as a accessory. This happened with the work “Wigs” that was commissioned by a clothing store. Some designs by this duo try’s to create surreal hair styles that can take the shape of an ice cream cone for example and are currently exposed in clothes shops windows, such as Jeffrey’s in Ny and Atlanta.

Peter Clark is a surprising British artist who creates an imaginary world filled with extraordinary characters. His work is base on collages with different materials that he funds on the street. To build his collages he uses material, that can go from old stamps, maps, labels, love letters, cards, buttons or dress patterns and textiles. Gugger Petter is a Danish artist that works with newspaper for nearly twenty years. She creates two and three dimensional works with this material and her fascination with newspaper “consists not only of its being the diary of our lives” as she claims, it also presents her with a black and white, as well as a limited color palette, which has always been her choice.

For Gugger, newspaper is a very respectful material, she doesn't see it as “recycled” or “trash” material. The fragile newspaper is manipulated till it becomes a strong material, it is rolled tightly into tubes and later sealed by varnish. To give the 2 and 3 dimensional effect, Gugger uses the weaving technique which helps creating a desired heavy structure.

A Geometria do A4

Esta é a primeira vez que participo neste blog e achei que seria interessante publicar um texto de Nuno Crato que responde na perfeição a uma questão que já tinha passado pela minha (e certamente pela vossa) mente de cada vez que usamos uma folha de papel: Porque é que o A4 tem estas dimensões específicas e não outras quaisquer?

Aqui fica a explicação do porquê da Geometria do A4...

O formato do papel que utilizamos nas fotocopiadoras e impressoras, e que se generalizou a cartas e blocos, tem uma designação curiosa: chamamos-lhe A4, um formato utilizado em quase todo o Mundo. As folhas medem 210 milímetros de largura e 297 de altura. Uma medida estranha, pois parecia mais lógico que medissem um número redondo. Por que não 20 e 30 centímetros, por exemplo?

Essas medidas bizarras resultam de uma convenção muito pensada, que o nosso país adoptou em 1954, ainda no sistema alemão DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung e.V.). Formalizaram-se depois na norma ISO 216 da International Organization for Standardization. Segundo essa norma, há uma série de formatos básicos de papel que começa no A0, o maior, decresce para o A1, o A2, o A3..., parando, na prática, no minúsculo A10, de 26 por 37 milímetros. Todos esses formatos são construídos de forma a obter o formato de número superior dobrando ao meio uma folha. Isso quer dizer, por exemplo, que dobrando o A0 se obtém o A1, e que dobrando o A4 se obtém o A5. Mas há na norma muito mais do que isso. Os formatos estão construídos de forma a manter sempre a mesma proporção entre os lados do papel. As dimensões são arredondadas ao milímetro, o que fornece uma aproximação bastante razoável.

A regra é muito prática, sobretudo nas fotocópias. Colocando lado a lado duas folhas A4 e escolhendo o modo de redução, é possível que cada das folhas originais seja fotocopiada precisamente para metade da folha A4 resultante. É fácil ver que nem todos os formatos permitiriam a mesma proeza. Se as folhas originais fossem quadradas, por exemplo, e quiséssemos fotocopiar duas, com redução, para outra folha quadrada, teríamos de desperdiçar metade da folha da cópia. No A4, como a proporção se mantém quando dobramos a folha a meio, não há desperdícios.

Que formato têm que ter as folhas para manterem as proporções quando as dividimos ao meio? Basta fazer umas contas simples para o descobrir. Os lados do rectângulo têm de estar na proporção de um para raiz de dois (aproximadamente 1,4142). Não há outra solução. Faça o leitor as contas e verá que 210 x 1,4142 = 296,982, praticamente 297. Encontrámos as proporções do A4.

Tudo isto obedece a uma lógica perfeita, mas é preciso definir o ponto de partida. Como é construído o A0? Curiosamente, também este não é arbitrário. Foi definido com lados na proporção de um para raiz de dois, como teria de ser, mas acrescentou-se-lhe a restrição de ter área equivalente a um metro quadrado. Com isto, o sistema ficou perfeitamente definido. Por sorte, daí resultou um A4 que tem um formato ideal para os trabalhos de escritório.
Para calcular o peso de uma resma de papel, por exemplo, estas normas facilitam as contas. O peso, a «gramagem», como dizem os profissionais, vem referido ao metro quadrado. É habitual usar, por exemplo, o papel de 75 gramas por metro quadrado. Quer isso dizer que uma folha A0 desse papel pesa 75 g. Como no A0 existem 16 A4, basta fazer umas contas simples para verificar que uma resma (500 folhas) de A4 pesa 2343,75 gramas.

O sistema definido pela norma ISO 216 tem ainda duas outras séries de formatos. É a série B, destinada a envelopes contendo documentos com folhas da série A, e a série C, destinada a envelopes ligeiramente menores, que podem conter menos folhas. Assim, por exemplo, se o leitor quiser um envelope para enviar uma brochura A4, deve usar um envelope B4 (250x353). Se quiser enviar um pequeno documento A4, deve adquirir um envelope C4 (229x324). Assim saibam os vendedores o que estão a vender.

Mas nem as dimensões exactas dos envelopes escapam à lógica matemática. Para definir o sistema B, usa-se a média geométrica entre dois formatos A consecutivos. Assim, por exemplo, para definir o envelope B4, calcula-se a média geométrica entre as dimensões do papel A4 e as do A3. Para definir o formato C usa-se um processo semelhante. O envelope C4, por exemplo, define-se pela média geométrica entre os formatos A4 e B4.

A média geométrica é uma média, diria La Palisse, dando pois dimensões intermédias entre os valores extremos. Mas é uma média peculiar. Obtém-se tirando a raiz ao produtos dos dois valores. Por isso mantém as proporções relativas. Assim, B4 está para A4 tal como A3 está para B4.

Todo este sistema complexo evoluiu ao longo dos séculos, vindo-se a impor em quase todo o Mundo. Ao que se julga, a primeira pessoa a ter a ideia de normalizar o papel com regras semelhantes foi um professor de Física alemão chamado Georg Christoph Lichtenberg (1742-1799). Numa carta que escreveu em 1786 ao seu amigo Johann Beckmann, discorreu sobre as vantagens estéticas e práticas de utilizar papel em que os lados estivessem na proporção de um para raiz de dois. Sobre as vantagens práticas estava mais que certo, mas sobre as estéticas é duvidoso. Os técnicos gráficos sabem que estas séries não são esteticamente aconselháveis para cartazes ou magazines. Nem os «posters» que se vêem pela rua nem as revistas do EXPRESSO utilizam os formatos da norma ISO 216. Essa é uma das razões que levam os norte-americanos a não abandonarem o formato «letter», que utilizam há muitos anos e que mede 8 por 11 polegadas (aproximadamente 216 x 279 mm).

As vantagens práticas do método de Lichtenberg, contudo, são tão evidentes que o governo francês decidiu adoptá-lo logo após ter instituído o metro. Em 1794, a «Loi sur le Timbre» definiu vários formatos que correspondem à actual norma ISO. Instituiu o «grand registre» (actual A2), o «grand papier» (B3), o «moyen papier» (A3), o «petit papier» (B4), a «demi feuille» (B5) e o «effets de commerce» (1/2 B5). Só faltava o A4.

A norma ISO é hoje adoptada em quase todo o Mundo. Quando pegar num A4, leitor, lembre-se que está a pegar numa peça com uma história matemática distinta.
