It took 25 days for Matt Elliott to make 704 km, in cold hard weather conditions. Here are some of the moments of this extraordinary voyage trough the big white of the Antartic.

South Pole Race: UPDATE

Matt Elliott and his team mate called in requesting to be picked up by the support team. With Matt struggling with swollen lips and Yoyo not be able to consume food, the team was brought forward to the checkpoint for treatment by the race doctor and a short recovery period before attempting the second leg to the South Pole.


All teams are constantly under medical surveillance and when reaching the Mid-race Checkpoint everyone has to do several medical check-ups and rest for at least 24 hours as this is one of the most extreme races in the world.

The adventure continues...

Imagine running on the top of a polar plateau, with winds up to 120km/h, temperatures as low as -40º C and the threat of blinding snowstorms at any moment. This is the scenery of the South Pole Race where our athlete Matt Elliott has already ran 236 Kilometres in these conditions and is almost reaching the middle checkpoint!

Five days into the race and Matt Elliott and his team have already covered over 150 kilometers. Today they wooke up with a completely grey start to the day, the sky was covered by cloud and you could make out the horizon line dividing the sky and the ground.

The competitors will race to be the first to the Geographic South Pole fighting against winds of up to 80mph, temperatures as low as -40C, and the threat of blinding snowstorms, this is the ultimate extreme endurance race set in the stunning landscape of one of the coldest, driest, and highest deserts on the planet.

Matt Elliott and Navigator Paper have joined up and boarded in this adventure to raise funds for both The Alzheimer's Society and The Royal Britsih legion. Using only cross country skis, Matt will pull pulks (sleds) containing all of our equipment, food, safety gear over 550 miles (750km) until the finish line on the Geographic South Pole.

Did you know that 2011 is the International year of forests?

2011 was declared by the United Nations “The International Year of Forests”.

The aim of this action is to raise awareness on sustainable management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests by promoting the partnership between governments and active local and intentional associations.

The launch of this action toke place the February 2, at United Nations headquarters during the ninth session of the United Nations Forum on Forests.

The UN has organized several number of activities to celebrate the International Year and foster that include high-level panel discussions, film screenings, the issuance of the United Nations commemorative stamp series for the International Year, and other public events. Paper in a world of art! Paper Cut Project

The north american designers Nikki Salk and Amy Flurry create a kind of a theatrical pieces using paper-cut techniques. They collaborate together in this paper-cut project to produce elaborate hand made paper creations that can be exposed, for instance in clothing store as a accessory. This happened with the work “Wigs” that was commissioned by a clothing store. Some designs by this duo try’s to create surreal hair styles that can take the shape of an ice cream cone for example and are currently exposed in clothes shops windows, such as Jeffrey’s in Ny and Atlanta.

Paper in a world of art! Peter Clark

Peter Clark is a surprising British artist who creates an imaginary world filled with extraordinary characters. His work is base on collages with different materials that he funds on the street. To build his collages he uses material, that can go from old stamps, maps, labels, love letters, cards, buttons or dress patterns and textiles. Using very different techniques, Clark manipulates his paper or other objects and creates three-dimensional images. He puts his hands on different textures, patterns and colours of his “trash” and creates extraordinary objects of our quotidian, from motorbikes to dresses, animals or beasts.

Paper in a world of art! Gugger Petter

Gugger Petter is a Danish artist that works with newspaper for nearly twenty years. She creates two and three dimensional works with this material and her fascination with newspaper “consists not only of its being the diary of our lives” as she claims, it also presents her with a black and white, as well as a limited color palette, which has always been her choice.

For Gugger, newspaper is a very respectful material, she doesn't see it as “recycled” or “trash” material. The fragile newspaper is manipulated till it becomes a strong material, it is rolled tightly into tubes and later sealed by varnish. To give the 2 and 3 dimensional effect, Gugger uses the weaving technique which helps creating a desired heavy structure.

Paper in a world of art! Helen Musselwhite’s work

Helen Musselwhite, an artist from UK, creates an entire landscape of forest, trees and wild animals, combining a number of techniques that value the paper as a very interesting base material. She goes from paper-cutting, passing troughs paper folding and collage. Her 3-dimensional works can take you to an authentic magical fairyland, were each paper sculpture and collage is hand made from various paper stock and then built together in layers, creating a beautiful artwork. Fro her studio in the North West of the U.K, she creates each piece with her own hands and participates in projects worldwide and with brands and personalities, such as Stella McCartney, Nokia or Cadburys.

Paper in a world of art! Karen Bit Vejle’s work

“My heart and soul are at peace when I have my scissors in hand and the paper dances between the blades” ... These are the words of Karen Bit Vejle, a Norwegian artist who creates images out of air and paper. With her scissors, Karen preforms her art, starting from a large and continuous piece of paper and ending in a extraordinary contemplation object. This is called psaligraphy and it means literally the art of drawing or painting with scissors.

There are not so many people dedicated to this art and, in Europe, Karen is one of the few. Her exceptional technique and detailed drawings are the result of a strong love and almost 35 years of dedication, as well as a high and unique creativity. One of the characteristics of papercutting is that it is a slow art, patience and relaxing activity, contradicting almost everything else in todays world.

In the early beginnings, Origami art was used as a greeting card for, as an example, a valuable gift. Nowadays you can do the same and fold your best paper with love and art and offer it or simply use it for decoration.

Origami follows 3 simple rules that you must use in your first origami experience. When you crease your paper, be sure to flatted quite well for a successful model, unless of course the instructions tell you otherwise. You can reinforce a crease by running the side of your thumbnail along the fold, or even use some sort of tool.
The instructions are very important so you should follow them, read each description very carefully, and look at each detail of the picture.
